The home we purchased is a beautiful home, and exactly what we wanted. However, the management in charge of the paperwork/inspection/scheduling process was a nightmare. We had to call several times to ensure deadlines were met, after the fact that we missed some deadlines which costs us, the buyer, more money. Once the house was finished, there were many things still needing to be installed (cabinet handles and light fixtures for example) which took multiple trips from the punch list crew to install. Everything form crooked hinges and loose nut and bolts are still found 3 years later. I highly recommend choosing another builder. It’s not worth the added stress. UPDATE: Jamie reached out to get the punch list taken care of that we requested. Last week our bathroom doors were replaced due to not being installed correctly in the first place (not blaming them directly, but the subcontractors they hire to do the work). The new doors look great! We reached out to see when the workers would return to finish. We were told a day, but never a time to make sure we are home. They did arrive and do the work, but failed to notify us that they were returning the next day. Still no communication on day or time of when they would arrive. The next morning they arrived unannounced while we were still sleeping, as well as our baby. I appreciate that they reached out to do the work we requested, but failure to communicate has caused more headaches. This just doubles down on our initial complaints of poor communication from builder to buyer, which causes unneeded stress and inconvenience for us.

Here are a few things to consider before working with Donaway. We believe that they do a good job. Our concern is the way they do business. First, you will find that Donaway uses what they call an “Agreement of Purchase" and they refuse to give their buyers the protections they should have. For example, we asked for a provision that said that the price they offered was the total cost, even if they later find errors or omissions. They had agreed to this verbally but refused to confirm it in writing. In short, they rejected everything we asked for as ”legalisms” and asked us to just trust them. I would also advise you to look at their warranty. First, it’s only for one year. Second, it says that Donway is responsible for cosmetic issues and that if there are any issues with the foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, etc., the customer has to deal with the subcontractors. I have never seen such a provision and for good reason. Finally, once we had decided not to work with them for the reasons above, we asked for a refund of some of the money we had paid them. They agreed, but they said they’d repay it because the work it covered had not been done. It turns out that the work they wanted us to pay for was not shown in any of the documents we had received. Who knows what else they’d claim we needed to pay for without telling us? It shows we were right in asking for an agreement in writing about the total cost … and perhaps it explains why they didn’t want to sign it. Maybe you’re comfortable working this way. We weren’t.
