Jim designed and built a beautiful wood table for our small dining room space that is exactly what we were hoping for, but seemed impossible to find! We have truly enjoyed the working with Jim, his thoughtful approach to the work, and being able to collaborate together about the vision. With a stroke of luck I found an outstanding carpenter in the SoPo area who will make magic! It was a very old chest of drawers that was falling apart which was wicked hard to deal with and I couldn"t get the drawers back inside it.
I took it to Mr. Vander Schaaf and honestly I could not believe what it looks like now, fantastic!
He is very fair in price and is great on explaining what I needed.
This opportunity of finding him right here in South Portland was wonderful.

Outstanding experience with Jim. Had a challenging job creating a teak companionway screen insert for my boat - and nothing on a boat is square or level. Jim took the time to carefully custom craft a perfect fit. Not only does it fit perfectly, it’s also beautiful. Very happy customer!

James was very knowledgeable about wood and creating beautiful things for our home. He walked us through every step of the process for designing and building floating shelves in our condo including going to the lumber yard to select the wood and deciding where and how to hang them. He also installed them and they are beautiful. Very reasonably priced too. Highly recommend if you love interesting material and design for your home.

We recently renovated our bathroom and needed a custom threshold built. It was a bit complicated due to the varying heights between the bathroom and hall as well as specific angles, and a sloping floor due to house settling. Jim was very responsive and eager to take on the project. Jim's extensive woodworking knowledge and attention to detail is exactly what this project needed.
